5 Female-Led Summer Blockbusters You Need to See

5 Female-Led Summer Blockbusters You Need to See

Every summer, the theaters are packed with flicks featuring testosterone-overloaded casts and too many car explosions to count. But this year, the same old summer blockbusters are shaken up a little bit with star female-led casts and women-centric plots. Forgo that ticket to see the latest sequel to The Expendables (seriously when are they going to stop?) and check out one of these instead.

Pitch Perfect 2 (May 15th)

Your favorite singing ladies are back with even more sass and sisterhood. The Barden Bellas return to compete in an international a cappella competition after a big wardrobe malfunction involving Fat Amy during a performance at Lincoln Center. Set out to be the first American group to snag the international title in order to restore their status, the ensemble cast of Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, and Anna Camp are bringing their best voices and aca-faces.

Spy (June 6th)

When the “big guns” of the CIA are out of commission, an analyst and behind-the-scenes expert (Melissa McCarthy) decides to step up and take on a mission. McCarthy stars opposite Rose Byrne who plays an arms dealer. Both have proved to be hilarious and had a great comedic chemistry in Bridesmaids together, and this looks like it’ll be much of the same.

Inside Out (June 19th)

Disney’s newest Pixar film is about a young girl going through a life transition and all of the emotions guiding her through it…literally. The five emotions, Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust, and Sadness are characters personified inside Riley’s head that have a journey of their own. It also stars the vocal talents of Amy Poehler (as the emotion ‘Joy’) and Mindy Kaling (as ‘Disgust’) – if that isn’t an example of perfect voice casting, I don’t know what is.

Trainwreck (July 17th)

If you haven’t heard of Amy Schumer yet, you will soon. Schumer has her own show on Comedy Central and some of her skits have been going viral lately with Last F**kable Day starring Tina Fey and Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Football Town Lights. A lot of her material covers sexism in hilarious ways. Her upcoming film Trainwreck is directed by Judd Apatow and written by herself. It’s about a commitment-phobic female falling in love against all her better instincts. Kind of like a typical rom-com in reverse.

Paper Towns (July 24th)

This one appeals to the young adult crowd and avid John Green fans. Paper Towns is based on Green’s best-selling novel released in 2008 about a boy-next-door who tries to unravel the mystery behind the enigmatic Margo Roth Spiegelman (played by Cara Delevingne). If you liked the source material and you liked the way the film version of The Fault in Our Stars turned out, you’ll probably enjoy this one.

Ricki and the Flash (August 7th)

The reigning queen of Hollywood, Meryl Streep, plays a female rock star who left her family behind to pursue her musical career. She ends up returning to reconnect with her grown daughter who is dealing with a divorce. Fun fact: her daughter in the film is played by her real-life daughter, Mamie Gummer. Streep die-hard fans will definitely enjoy seeing her in this role.

If any of these films tickle your fancy, make sure to head out this summer for lots of laughs and plenty of girl-power.
