5 Quick Things to Know About the LOONCUP

For as long as anyone can remember there have been two highly marketed options when it comes to your period — pads and tampons. The menstrual cup is a third, lesser-discussed option, but an option nonetheless. It’s also proven to be one of the most innovative options.

The team behind LOONCUP includes five women and three men, a mix of entrepreneurs PhDs and marketers, who are looking to revolutionize the way women keep track of their menstrual cycle. Essentially LOONCUP is a Bluetooth-compatible menstrual cup that will be able to sync to an app on your iPhone or iWatch and help you track your period.

Here are five facts about the LOONCUP that are worth noting.

1. The technology is safely enclosed.

A big fear when exploring the use of the LOONCUP is how exactly the cup syncs to an app. As per their website, the hardware is safely enclosed within a silicon body that is more than safe to insert into your body.

2. It’s non-rechargeable.

While some menstrual cycle-related costs might be offset with the purchase of the LOONCUP, it is not a one-time purchase. Since the battery on a cup is expected to last up to six months, the LOONCUP would have to be purchased at least twice a year.

3. It measures blood volume and color.

One of the unique selling points for LOONCUP is its ability to measure blood volume and color, therefore potentially alerting the user of any abnormalities. According to their Kickstarter page, it’s able to do this thanks to three different sensors found in the cup — triaxial, RGB and force.

4. It should not be worn through airport security

While this may seem like a small detail, it’s important to note that given the battery and hardware found in the cup, it’s not recommended to wear through any x-ray machines because it will likely set it off.

5. It can be worn along with IUDs

In LOONCUP’s FAQ it is noted that the LOONCUP should be safe to use even if a woman has an IUD.
