Yesterday I was “playing” with myself by rubbing and and pressing my vagina opening. I didn’t insert my finger or even remove my underwear while doing that. I went to the bathroom and everything was normal. However, few hours later I felt slight pain when I was walking, and when I checked, there was blood on my underwear. It wasn’t quite a lot and I didn’t feel anything afterwards. The bleeding had stopped but I am still wondering why this happened; I never had any sexual activity other than masturbation and scared that I accidentally tore my hymen or something.

Masturbation is the perfect way for you to figure out what feels good. By taking matters “in your own hands,” you are on your way towards getting in touch with your sexual pleasures. A large national study showed that 89% of females and 95% of males have masturbated. Masturbation is a completely normal part of adolescence and is usually the first sexual experience. Masturbation is a lifelong gift!

What is masturbation exactly?

Masturbation is the “self-stimulation of the genitals to achieve sexual arousal and pleasure—hopefully to where you have an orgasm! Being in the right mood and with a relaxing environment helps your experience be a success. Using fingers, hands, lubricants, sex toys, porn*, and fantasy are fun ways to learn your pleasure spots.

Benefits of Masturbation

There are many benefits:

  • You understand what makes you feel good so you can help you partner with a successful roadmap in bed.
  • It’s a normal and healthy sexual activity that’s pleasurable and safe.
  • It’s a perfect way to release sexual tension and stress.
  • Improves sexual health and relationships.
  • It’s a natural sleeping pill.
  • It’s a guaranteed way to avoid getting a sexually transmitted infection or pregnant.

Can masturbation be harmful?

Rarely does it cause any physical injury or harm to the body. Trauma to your lady parts including the vagina, labia (lips) or clitoris is more likely when using objects not meant to be used inside the vagina. Certain cultures and religion call it a sin which can lead to guilt or emotional shame.

Excessive masturbation interfering with your daily life can be source of great distress.

In your particular case, even though you didn’t put your finger or anything else into the vagina, the rubbing and pressing at the vaginal opening could have caused some trauma to the hymnal ring. The hymnal ring is delicate tissue that surrounds and partly covers the entrance to the vagina of a virgin. Even if you are a virgin, the delicate hymnal ring can tear (like a cut) with excessive rubbing and pressing causing bleeding and pain. You may experience bleeding and pain for a couple of days while it heals.

No matter what you call it, polish the pearl, manual override, or self-love, masturbation is a normal and healthy pastime with proven health benefits for women.  Practice makes perfect!

A note on pornography: Not everything you see in pornography is real and in many cases what you see is pure fiction. Pornography is not for everyone and can feel like too much if you are not ready for sexual activity.
