Why ‘#GIRLBOSS’ Is an Inspiration to All Women

At first glance you may think that #GIRLBOSS is just going to be another book that’s something along those lines of “Seven Tips for Successful Entrepreneurship.” But after just glancing at the titles on the “Content” page, you’ll come to realize this book may just be the kick-ass inspirational page-turner you’ve been waiting for!

Sophia Amoruso the author of the book and founder and CEO of clothing giant Nasty Gal, shows us that you don’t need to be a privileged, Ivy-League educated business mogul in order to be successful. She takes us through her self-journey from rags to riches, covering everything from how she built her company debt-free to how she deals with day-to-day duties of business ownership. Whether you’re a budding millennial entrepreneur or a Gen X-er looking to take her hobby or smallbusiness to the next level, #GIRLBOSS has advice for you.

#GIRLBOSS can inspire all women of all ages because every lady can relate to aspects of Sophia’s life, whether it be not being able to buy the shoes you really want or having to work crappy job after crappy job just to get by. This book is for any person feeling stuck in her everyday life, for anyone feeling underappreciated at work because she’s a woman, and for anyone who thinks her dream job will never become a reality. Sophia Amoruso will show you that with a lot of hard work and a dream, anything is possible.

What are some of my favorite inspiring lessons from Sophia Amoruso? Here are my top six.

1. “Just be your own idol.” (Chapter 1)

Sophia focuses on how if you spend most of your day putting effort into being someone else, or you spend time idolizing someone else, you’re wasting time that you could be investing in yourself.

2. “The sh*tty jobs make the good ones more meaningful.” (Chapter 3)

When people are stuck in a job they hate, they normally start feeling bad about themselves and become unmotivated to pursue their dreams. But if you realize that everybody has to start somewhere, you’ll eventually find something you love, and the crappy job you have today just becomes another stepping stone in life to get you where you really want to be.

3. “It’s easier to ask for forgiveness then for permission.” (Chapter 3)

Sophia took this expression pretty literally in her book, but her lesson from it is unforgettable. People are always going to tell you that you won’t succeed or that you can’t do something. But instead of asking people if your idea is good, or if you will succeed, you just need to do it. You have to try, and if you fail, then they can say “I told you so,” but don’t let them stop you from trying.

4. “When your time spent making money is significantly greater then your time spent spending money, you will be amazed at how much you can save without really thinking about it.” (Chapter 5)

After going through a creditcardcrisis, Sophia realized how important saving money really is. As much as people wish it wasn’t true, money controls our lives. If you have money, you have freedom, and as Sophia says, “Money in the bank looks a lot better than on your feet.”

5. “You don’t get what you don’t ask for.” (Chapter 5)

People always seem to be ashamed to ask when they need help. The next time you find yourself in need of something or someone’s help, just ask! What’s the worst thing that could happen?

6. “The first step towards those dreams is probably going to be a small one.” (Chapter 9)

One small step towards your dreams is all you may need to get the ball rolling on your future success. Don’t be afraid to take a step, no matter how small.
